While it would be nice if the new iPhone were thinner and lighter, it would also be nice if the screen itself were bigger. Rumors of an end-to-end picture seem likely to be true, so even if the glass is the same size, the actual picture will be larger. That's not enough, though. Apple needs to make the glass itself a bit larger as well. After messing with enough phones -- color me spoiled in terms of screen size.
With the highly anticipated iPhone 5 coming out soon, predictions of new features are everywhere. Though Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is quick to sue copycats looking to improve their products by adding Apple-inspired features, it might not be a bad idea for the company to ask itself, "who can we copy?"
Upgrading features is not exactly copying, though -- it's more like a natural progression. Samsung Deserves a Second Look
Apple will definitely upgrade the new iPhone's front- and back-facing cameras to compare better with competitors like the Evo 4G and Galaxy line of phones.The iPhone 5's glass is rumored to have a curved shape, which is what the Samsung Nexus S already has. This idea is a good one, because it replicates what Samsung is doing. To my mind, Samsung is the leader in sleek design. Its phone are light, clean and not clunky at all.
The iPhone 4 suffers from the clunk factor, without a doubt. It is too heavy and thick. Samsung phones like the Galaxy S II are big but not overwhelming.
Weak Competition
HTC phones like the Incredible 2 are also simple and light, but they don't pack a punch or bring the "wow" factor. Other HTC phones, like the Evo, are just plain big. They look cool, but when you handle them they are tablet-esque.As a side note, let me add that the Evo is a cool phone, but the Evo Shift totally sucks. It is clunky and what I consider a not-so-well thought out marketing gimmick. Apple won't make the same mistake of releasing a keyboard version.
Motorola (NYSE: MOT) brings out a few variations that fit different needs, but the bottom line is that it, like HTC, seems to use cheaper parts.

It is nice to have something smaller sitting in your pocket, but after messing with enough phones -- color me spoiled in terms of screen size. In terms of what fits inside the pants pocket, bigger is not always better, but when playing with and looking at phones, bigger is better.
The iPhone Won't Be Scooped
As for Apple's September release date, there's been some criticism that it's bad for Apple because competitors will be releasing phones at the same time. That's hogwash -- the iPhone will easily drown out the competition, as always.Still, there are things Apple can look at -- other than the potential for lawsuits. In many instances, it might find ideas for adapting and upgrading its own product line without adding much cost burden for consumers or manufacturers.
